Stirling Castle, Scotland
Although not particularly common, the Stirling name is closely tied with both early and modern Scottish history. The name is said to derive from the rock upon which Stirling Castle was built, and Castle Rock of Stirling had been the site of fortifications since the days of the earliest man. Available evidence shows that those of Scottish descent named Stirling, Sterling, or Starling were descended from one line, and one of the first of the family was Walter De Striuelyng, born around 1100. Over the centuries there exists many dozens of variations in the spelling of the name.
About 40 different coats-of-arms have been granted to the Scottish Stirling families, most of them bearing the emblem of Stirling of Cadder with three buckles on a diagonal band as seen above. In heraldic terms, the description is “argent on a bend sable, three buckles of the field” (silver or white, with a black diagonal band and three buckles, representing a sword belt over the right shoulder). The Stirling clan motto, “Gang forward”, translates to “Going forward”.
Our Stirling ancestors emigrated from the Glasgow region of Scotland in the early 1850s. They originally settling in the Buffalo, New York area but within a few years, most of the family members had dispersed to other parts of the country. Their immigration was part of a mass migration from Great Britain that peaked in the early 1850s at about 60,000 immigrants per year with by far, the highest percentage coming from Scotland. By 1890, there were over 250,000 people living in the United States who were born in Scotland.
