Elizabeth Thomson Stirling

By 1920, three of their children were still living at home with Elizabeth and George [07], and the 1930 census finds the two living alone together in Lake Charles [08]. Elizabeth and her family were very active in the local Methodist Church. George King passed away in 1935 and his wife Elizabeth followed him in death in 1940. Their final resting place is in the Orange Grove Cemetery, Lake Charles [02].

Elizabeth Thompson Stirling, John and Rebecca Stirling’s first daughter was born in the Cincinnati Ohio area on December 4, 1863. Within a short period of time, her family moved to Ft. Wayne, Indiana, and her sister Elvira was born about three years after Elizabeth [03]. Elizabeth’s parents separated, probably in the mid 1870s, and mother Rebecca and her two daughters show up next on an 1880 Jasper County, Missouri census [04]. Soon after, the family is found living in Parsons, Kansas, at the home of her brother A.O. Brown. Sister Elvira attended school here for a short period of time and it is also mentioned in her uncle’s obituary that Elizabeth was raised by the A.O. Brown family there in Parsons.
It was in Parsons where 19 year old Elizabeth met her husband, George Merritt King whose family was originally from Maine. They were married at her uncle A.O.’s house on June 28, 1883 with George’s father, minister Cyrus Armstrong King officiating [02]. Within about ten years, Elizabeth and George King had four children born in different parts of Kansas [04].

In about 1892, Elizabeth, George and family moved to the Lake Charles area of Louisiana, following his family [06], and they had three more children, Edna, Dewey and Albion for a total of seven [07][08].
George King was one of the men responsible for transforming Lake Charles into a major commercial and industrial center. By 1925, his credits included being secretary-treasurer of the Powell Lumber Company, the Weber King Lumber Company, and the Farmer’s Land & Canal Company. He was also treasurer of the Farmers Rice Milling Company, and a director of the Calcesieu National Bank of Southwest Louisiana [01]. George’s father Reverend Cyrus Armstrong King was one of the men responsible for organizing the Simpson Methodist Church in 1890. Cyrus King and his wife Frances Perkins are both originally from Maine, and he officiated at the marriages of all of his children and some of his grandchildren [02].

Elizabeth and George’s third son, Alvin Olin King attended business college at Parsons, Kansas, graduated from Tulane University Law School in New Orleans and was elected to the Louisiana State Senate from Calcasieu Parish in 1924. In 1932, when Huey Long vacated the governorship for his seat in the United States Senate, Alvin Olin King replaced him as governor of Louisiana for the five months remaining in Long’s elected term [01].
