George Stirling Sr. and Elizabeth Thomson

George Stirling, the father of John Stirling was born about 1796 in Lanarkshire, Scotland [01] and was married to Elizabeth Thompson on November 22, 1818 in Dunblane, Perth County, Scotland [02]. According to the 1851 census, Elizabeth was born about 1801 in Edinburgh Scotland [03]. Their first child, George was born in December of 1819 followed by another son John in 1824, a daughter Marion in 1825, and about 14 years after that, their last son, Thomas in 1835 [02].

George and family lived in the Glasgow area where he worked as a merchant. He was listed on the 1841 Scotland census as being a furniture dealer [02] and on the 1851 census as a milk dealer [03]. George and his family immigrated to the United States aboard the Steamship Glasgow arriving at the port of New York in August of 1853 [04]. The family settled in Buffalo, NY where his oldest son George and family had already settled, but George Sr. does not appear on the subsequent Buffalo censuses, and is presumed to have passed away at some date between his arrival in1853 and the 1860 Buffalo NY census [05]. On the 1865 Buffalo census, Elizabeth is identified as a widow [06]The location of George Stirling’s burial is not known at this time.

George’s widowed wife Elizabeth is found living with her son Thomas on all other censuses for Buffalo NY and Ft. Wayne, Indiana [07] where she lived the latter part of her life. The families of her son John and daughter Marion were also located in Ft. Wayne at this time. On June 9, 1878 at the age of 77, Elizabeth passed away [08] and was laid to rest in the family plot at Lindenwood Cemetery, Ft. Wayne [09].
