Around 1867, Thomas and his mother moved to Ft. Wayne, Indiana where his sister Marion was living. In Ft. Wayne, Thomas was employed as a lumber dealer [17] and only a few weeks after his mother Elizabeth had passed away, he was married to Ida M. Green on June 26, 1878 in Allen County, Indiana [18].

Their first child, daughter Betsy was born in 1879 with their next two children, Lewis and Ida following before 1884. Around this time [19], Thomas, Ida and their three children moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota according to the 1885 Minneapolis census [20].

At the age of 55 years, Thomas Stirling passed away on March 6, 1892 in Minneapolis where he was described in his obituary as a prominent businessman [21][22]. His wife and children stayed together until about 1904 when his daughter Ida was married to Earnest Thomas. The two families are shown as being adjacent households on 10th Street on the 1905 Minneapolis census [23]. Son Lewis Stirling was listed as a draftsman and salesman in subsequent censuses and directories [25][26], and sister Betsy worked as a book keeper at brother-in-law Earnest’s stationary company. Both Lewis and Betsy are found living with their mother and unmarried on the 1930 census at the ages of 40 and 45 [28], and it is presumed that neither has left any descendants. Their sister Ida Thomas had 5 children by the 1920 census including 4 sons and 1 daughter [27]Ida Stirling, their mother and Thomas Stirling’s wife passed away in 1935 at the age of about 77 years [29].

Thomas  Stirling
John Stirling’s brother Thomas Stirling was born in October 1835 in Dunblane, Scotland to parents George and Elizabeth Stirling [01,02]Thomas, the youngest of their children was born late, about 14 years after their last child, Marion. Thomas was working as a clerk by the age of 15 [03][04], and immigrated to America with his parents and sister aboard the Steam-ship Glasgow, arriving in New York in August of 1853 [05]

At some date between their arrival and the 1860 Buffalo census [06], Thomas’ father George had apparently passed away, and Thomas’ widowed mother, Elizabeth lived with him until her death in 1878.  During their stay in Buffalo, Thomas appears in numerous censuses and city directories, always employed as a book keeper and often living at the same address as his brother George on Sixth Street [07-16.
